How Do I Know If A Dog Groomer Is Right For Me?

We all want the best for our dogs. That includes making sure that their coat and paws are taken cared for as well. This is why finding a good groomer is so very important. And it seems like this should be something extremely easy, however, it is not always so clear-cut.

How Do I Know if A Dog Groomer Is Right For Me?

The reason it can be difficult is because, in general, the grooming industry is pretty unregulated. However, there is the Animal Welfare Act of 2006 which states that a dog groomer is responsible for meeting your pet’s needs while in their care. In general, you think this is a given, but sadly, it is not. Dogs have suffered severe burns or even fatalities in grooming establishments when equipment has been faulty or where animals have been left unsupervised while being dried.

First, you need to check out the grooming facilities you are considering, here are some pointers we got from the Humane Society:

  • Is the facility well-lit?
  • Does it look and smell clean?
  • Does the staff appear knowledgeable and caring?
  • Does the staff handle pets gently?
  • Are cages the appropriate size? (Do the animals have enough room to stand and turn around comfortably?)
  • Are dogs and cats caged in separate areas?
  • Are pets monitored regularly to prevent overheating during blow-drying?
  • Does the groomer keep complete pet records (including grooming, medical, vaccination, and emergency contact information)?

It is also important that your groomer is certified and insured. That means that they have taken training classes and that they are insured in case of accidents. Accidents happen to the best of us. When you know your groomer is insured that usually means that they have your pets best interest at heart.

Don’t forget to consider your pet:

Also, you want to make sure your dog is okay with being groomed. Sometimes no matter how wonderful of a groomer you find, your pet may not be so happy with them. Socialization is important. Your pet needs to be okay with other people and being touched. That’s why it is important that dogs visit your groomer as soon as they are fully vaccinated. Give them lots of praise and treats before and after, that way they learn that it is a fun place to visit.

How does regular grooming benefit my pet?

Don’t force your dog to be groomed if they don’t like it. However, grooming is very important. You can also learn a few tricks on how to groom them at home

  • Removes excess hair and dirt from their coat
  • Nails usually need to be clipped to avoid sticking to the carpet
  • Makes their coat shiny and healthy
  • Helps to keep them free from fleas and ticks.

How did you find your groomer and when did you know that they were (or were not) they right fit for you and your furry loved one? Let us know your thoughts and experiences, we’d love to hear from you!
